1. Reduced stress related to travel to and from an appointment
Attending for an appointment could well be a significant event for an elderly person's day to day life. Sometimes the person may need to arrange help for transport from a carer or a family member. If they are driving themselves to a new location, the experience of finding the place and parking could be stressful let alone the often daunting experience of seeing a medical professionals as you age.
Physiotherapy appointments are often regular - like weekly or fortnightly. Having a physio coming to your place will take the stress of constantly organising and planning the appointment outing.
2. Spend longer therapy time which is often needed for older people
Many people would agree that medical appointment can come with a sense of rushing. This is even more obvious for older people. For example, rests between exercises are needed due to reduced exercise endurance and/or shortness of breaths. Having a 45 minute session at home means that you can pace yourself for exercises and get the most benefit from the session without feeling rushed.
3. Help build rapport between clients and their therapists
Clients need to feel comfortable and safe in their own home. Having a physio coming to their home where they feel most comfortable will help build client-therapist rapport, this will help with achieving optimal therapy outcomes.
4. Exercises programs can be individualised to the person and their environment.
Assessing a client in their everyday environment will help physiotherapists to develop the most appropriate program that suits the person's ability and their home environment. It will also help physios to give the most relevant educational advice on things like how to pace oneself at home and tips on how to prevent near misses and falls at home.
5. Other needs and referrals can be identified.
During the visit, physios may pick up other aspects that the client may benefit from help. This may include a potential Occupational Therapy toilet frame and recliner chair to assist client getting up, or regular podiatrist visit. Appropriate referrals could be suggested to the client and their care coordinators.
